Cross-Canada by Train Part 2
Canadian Trains are, without a doubt, primitive compared to their counterparts in Japan and Europe. They are, however, steeped with tradition – and blood. Every mile of rail is built on the back of a dead Chinese migrant worker – most of whom were shamefully treated and used for the most dangerous work (demolitions) in the construction of the cross-Canada rail network. The rail network between Toronto and Winnipeg was first used to quickly transport troops who would go on to suppress a rebellion in Saskatchewan. In its time, the Canadian Pacific Rail network was the longest railway ever completed, and an impressive feat for the sparsely populated Canada. Vancouver was barely a town when CP Rail decided to make it the terminus for its rail system. Gordon Lightfoot’s “Railroad Trilogy” was all about this period of Canadian history.

Cross-Canada by Train Part 1
The train bound Canada together. One of the first promises made by Sir John A. MacDonald to bring British Columbia into Confederation was a coast-to-coast train system. The modern Canadian train system still utilitizes these old tracks, although unfortunately a loss of ridership and the lack of federal vision since the days of Pierre Trudeau meant that there was no longer 2 alternate trans-continental routes to take; whereas previously there was the (more scenic) Super-Continental and the Canadian, now there is only the Canadian (which bypasses the major Canadian cities of Calgary and Regina).
I had the opportunity to take the Canadian across Canada. Along the way, I saw rivers, gorges, trees (and more trees), prarie grasses. I met interesting people and learnt a lot about the country in the process. Herein lies the chronicle of my travels.

New Horizons to Strive For?
I was taking a good look at the website of Walter Muma and the trips he took. The man rode a moped from Ottawa to the tip of the Northwest Territories for God’s sake! What a man – Among other things, he has amazing trip ideas to James Bay and Labrador. The Labrador one is one I am very very seriously considering. If I had a motorcycle, I’d take it up to Northern Canada like he did. (And if I had a heart, I would like to be a man like he is. )
