Sorry, but Montreal isn’t all that.
As someone who lived in Montreal my entire life, I’d like to let “Montreal Simon” know that Montreal is even more of a hick town than Calgary, for reasons he will never be able to understand.

I live in a suburb of Montreal – and have since I was born.
The difference between you and me is that I have seen every part of the world, talked to people from every part of the world, and speak more than English and French. Montreal is nothing special. It is frozen in the winter, steaming in the summer, is hampered by its social inferiors in the rest of the province, and the victim of being multicultural in a very monocultural society.
Montreal sucks – sorry pal. It could have been great though.

yeah i see you’ve bin to Japan and you seem very much into the Jap culture, but it isn’t every part of the world maybe the other end of it
French and English arn’t the only languages i speak and i’ve bin to 5 out of the 7 continents…
Every place has its ups and downs, instead of just complaining about how you feal Montreal sucks be constructive and do something about it instead of playing with transformers

If you can’t accept that Montreal has a long way to go, you will never be able to improve it. Instead of blustering comments about how Montreal is somehow a great city, look at what is best abroad (superior transit systems, meritocracies instead of union-based fiefdoms, encouraging large economies, etc..) and import it here. Go ahead and do so. Maybe then I will tell people abroad “I’m a Montrealer” instead of “I’m a Canadian”.
Until then, Montreal will always be a second-rate city, with cold weather and an even colder population, on top of its horrible economy. Everyone knows it. Anyone who sincerely believes Montreal is the best city in the world to live in is ignorant or a liar. There is no convincing arguement to be made for Montreal on the basis of weather, politics, language, shopping, or what-have-you. The arguements that can be made are that Montreal has a night-life (a childish obsession mind you), and that it has history. Worrying about nightlife is something you do in college – if that is why you are living in Montreal, you need to step back and look at your priorities. Montreal has a short history compared to the rest of the world, so unless you are confining yourself to cities in Canada, it isn’t really a great choice.
Here’s some reality, away from the bullshit in the papers. A minority has no hope of fixing Quebec’s patronage system – that kind of reform has to come from inside the tribe. It isn’t racism either – it is a fact that to change culture you need to be a part of it. It is not my place to meddle in a culture of strip clubs and bars (sorry, I frequent neither).
I can’t change the weather (-40 in winter, +40 in summer), fix the potholes, pay off the debt, or run for mayor. (“Yes you can!! Yes you can!!” – Sure I could run, but when was the last time Montreal had an Anglophone mayor?) Besides the political scene, there is a lot that is wrong at a national level. I can’t change the stagnant economy of Montreal that is caused by provincial neglect, or crush the seperatist movement, that has stripped this city of much of its old money and makes it an uncertain investment prospect. I can’t fix the idiots who designed the bridges without a carpool lane, or eliminate the corrupt union people who lied and cheated their way through the construction of the Olympic Toilet Bowl. Instead I will enjoy my time here, and when they need my tax money, move to a better economy and watch it drown. It is too bad too, because Montreal could have been Canada’s Paris – instead, it is a husk of what it could have been, haunted by the ghosts of past glories.
Japan isn’t the only place I’ve ever been to. Sorry to burst your bubble. Besides, do you think I’m ignorant about the situation throughout Europe, the rest of Asia and Africa? Get a clue.
And as for the Habs, I look forward to teeing off with Christobal Huet in early spring after they bow out in the first or second round. Don’t worry, there are always the Expos. We all know Montreal is a major league town because it can support major league franchises.

my wife and i went to montreal for the weekend. we are still trying to shake off the experience.
- worst-dressed, sad-looking people i have seen anywhere. granted, it was jazz fest. but the young people on “the Main” were also, tacky, over-gelled, and lost-looking.
-though people were helpful, they had no energy, no wit, no opinions.
-the architecture was horrific. those sad little balconies….that horrible siding on the buildings….it was like jersey city and hartford, ct rolled up into one.
-the food was indelicate and horribly expensive.
