Wildrider / X-Brawn

So many people got a kick out of my Super Fire Convoy photoshoot, I thought I’d put up another toy from the same toyline – this time, X-Brawn AKA Wildrider in Car Robots. Unlike Prime, I managed to wait until he was released in America – probably saved myself 5-10 bucks that way. Of the three Car Brothers (Mach Alert, Speedbreaker and himself), he is probably the best. It seems strange to say that with half the hood hanging off one arm, but the incongruency actually looks very cool IMO.

Vehicle Mode

The Vehicle mode is based off a Mercedes M-Class SUV. Unfortunately, differences in law between North America and Japan meant that a lot of the beautiful detail had to be covered up; the rear lights were hidden, and the front lights had two stupid looking circles instead of the glorious oval-shaped headlights. Still, I am very grateful that Hasbro went to the trouble to bring these over.

Super Fire Convoy

When I was in University, I used to get 5-10$ a week in pocket money. One of the ways I supplemented that income was to write notes for the Biology Students Union. 40 hours of work bagged me about 50 or 60 dollars; obviously a very different pay grade than I am used to now. My other thing was selling Transformer knock-offs (Usually of G2 Laser Rod Optimus Prime) on EBay back in 2000 or ’01. I never cheated anyone – they were clearly labelled as KOs, but usually managed to pull in 30 or 40 dollars. At the time I received an offer to trade a bunch to an internet store for in-store credit. As a result I managed to get Super Fire Convoy for about 30$ worth of merchandise. (His sale price was 60-70$)

Compared to the outright terrible Transformers being sold at the time in North America, he was awesome. At the time, he was believed to be a Japanese-exclusive toy; however, after this the Transformers Robots in Disguise sub-line was announced, and Super Fire Convoy was released as Optimus Prime in North America. Despite the fact that I probably paid too much for him as a result, I never felt ripped off about it. There were stories about poor quality/floppy construction with the American version, and besides, he wasn’t really widely circulated in Montreal (we had some of the worst distribution ever for Transformers).

So how does he hold up today? Still photogenic, to say the least.

Things that irritate..

A few months back I was posting a bunch of political threads to a forum when I wound up in a flame war with one of the residents. Whatever, normally I keep myself away from them, but it wasn’t a particularly good time for me, work-wise. Anyway, all of a sudden tonight I remember one of the other users asserted “We know you hate americans, it’s cool, just stop posting articles about it!”.

I never even bothered responding to it, but now come to think about it, how could anyone possibly think I hate Americans..? I don’t mean that in a sarcastic manner either. I do dislike the American government, and hated certain treatment I had at the border, but I don’t see how that makes me “hate Americans”.

I guess some people take criticism as “hate”. It isn’t as if I am any less self-critical or less critical of my own country.

The Japanese Stikfas-Killer

Stikfas are fantastic toys, requiring imagination and some time to appreciate fully. Japanese manufacturers, not being ones to sit down in the face of competition, have created their own Stikfas-equivalents. The main company to watch out for is Atelier Sai. They have several toy lines in the wings right now that look fantastic (and are sans horrible official fiction to ruin it). They have a couple of interesting lines, the most being BJPM and Gene Block.

    BJPM

BJPM stands for “Block Joint Plastic Model”, and consists of many different kinds of model kits, ranging from 300 yen (2.50$) simple kits to 10 dollar transforming kits. There are also kits which solely consist of joints, which are incredibly useful for when one wants to try to expand his creation without buying new kits. They use 5 mm joints (approximately the same size as the standardized Transformer hand). They also look amazing, I would buy these at the drop of a hat.

BJPM
This doesn’t transform, but it does look amazing. Definitely worth the 9$ it costs.

Fan support is pretty strong for the line. Some fans are working on making a BJPM board game. Others have made amazing things out of BJPM; just check out the anime figures this Japanese blogger came up with.

Geneblock is another similar toy type, a bit more upscale and concentrating more on the super robot toys. The types available are exservant, extrooper, Fsoldier, and FORCEUnit, all going on sale this December. Subsequently, a “Geneblock Variable Type” kit will be sold as well; it is basically a Fsoldier which can transform into a tank sans removing all sorts of parts that is usually needed for something like this. The last one makes my mouth water, the picture is below.

Geneblock

I heard that the creators of Stikfas are going to be spending more time on other lines while letting Stikfas rest on its laurrels. I’m not convinced that this is a good idea, considering the quality and price of these toys…
