Picture of the Day: February 21st, 2007

In honour of having written about that peon Bernard Landry, I thought it would be appropriate to post this picture.

A strong wind blew this mammoth truck clean off the road. Reminds me of ol’ BL.

Bernard Landry and Concordia

I have to agree and disagree with my old friend Samir. In his blog article, which was published in the letters section of the Gazette, he mentions that Bernard Landry was partially responsible for gutting the school (true) and that the money would be better spent on other measures (true). Sam mentions the constantly broken escallators as a potential repair target. I part company there.

Raising the profile of a school is always a worthy investment – however, Bernard Landry is simply not a figure that people have positive feelings about. Isn’t he the guy who, in a drunken furor, accosted some latinos in a Quebec City hotel? He also was an utter failure as Premiere; can you name anything of importance he was responsible for?

At the same time, if Concordia paid 30 k for a decent business leader to teach a simple 3 credit course (one whose reknown was not limited to a few pure wool Quebecers), I wouldn’t object – and I wouldn’t care if the local profs cared either. Most of them weren’t exactly the top of the top in their fields – they get paid quite appropriately for what they do.

Someone linked to my comic book. I can read Japanese pretty well, but I couldn’t really understand what he was saying :/ He was talking about the translation I did to Japanese (which tried to be more along the lines of how people talk) – not sure if he liked it or not :/

Finished Enterprise Season 3…

So I finished Season 3 at last today.

It is funny, Star Trek used to be about social commentary with some action and a lot of adventure. It seems that Season 3 was about lots of action, some adventure – and cliched, over simplified social commentary. Watching some episodes of Enterprise made me outright uncomfortable – and I don’t mean in the good “it is challenging me to think” sort of way. Rather, it reminded me of a game I used to play with a friend in jr. high school. I would start off with asking the obvious. “Would you have sex with that ugly girl? “. He would answer no, and then I would ramp it up. “Well what about if your hands were tied? What if you were tied down to the bed? What if (et cetra)” – basically going from one implausable scenario to the next until he had no choice but to do the unthinkable. It was not a natural unfolding of events when they had to steal a warp coil – it felt ridiculous, unlike in DS9′s “In the Pale Moonlight”. I see that B&B’s reputation for loving time travel is unchallenged – there were 4 or 5 episodes that revolved around that concept Rolling Eyes

Still, the actual overarching story itself was quite “good” – it was interesting to see how a Vulcan could be addicted to emotion, for example. However, the way the acting was… not very impressive. I don’t necessarily blame the actors – I blame the directors, most of whom felt like amateurs. It seemed like the entire cast of Voyager got to direct an episode (I know, exaggeration on my part). Season 4 had many moments that felt better than this.

I don’t intend on seeing season 1 and 2. The premise of Enterprise seems to have only come to pass in Season 4 anyway.
