Getting mod rewrite working in Ubuntu 8.10.
Had to get Mod rewrite working, but I kept getting the dreaded server configuration 500-error messages. Did some checking and it turns out that you need to do some config work beforehand.

In short, you need to enable mod rewrites in the Apache configuration and install the apache “rewrite” module. After this I rebooted my system (restart wasn’t working) and the problem was solved.
The things people remember me for…
Jawaad > Your name sounds familiar but I’m not sure from where – did we go to college together or something?
Lea > think: sexual harrassment themed skit in hasegawa sensei”s class. if you don’t remember that, i don”t know you anymore.
Jawaad > Oh my God. Leah san!!

Saw "Che" today.
Great movie, but watching it in Spanish with Japanese subtitles was a little too much.

Finding a mosque in Kawagoe? ???????????????
You probably googled and found this:
http://www.islamicfinder.org/getitWorld.php?id=54113&lang=arabic
I’m not going to link to it because I don’t want to give them any exposure. The information on that site is incorrect. First, all the phone numbers numbers they have listed are non-functional. As a matter of fact, the “cell phone number” that is listed is actually that of some Japanese woman who was terrified when I called her! Second, the address that they have listed is in English and of little use if you want to pass it to a taxi driver.
The location is called Ousenba (???). The address that you need to pass to the Taxi driver is this:
???361-1
Print it, or say “Oh-senba san hyaku roku juu ichi no ichi ni onegai shimasu.”
If you are a cheap Paki (as we all are) and want to walk, you can try using google maps (click to see the link). Keep in mind, it is about 30 minutes from the station. I’ll go take pictures on the weekend I guess.
Asahi Front Page Roundup – 1-13-2009
I have a subscription to the Asahi Shinbun; it is one of those things that provides me with a challenge when I’m sick of staring at a computer screen. They have a website (www.asahi.com) but good luck navigating that busy layout. (It is the #1 website I show when I want to explain what I dislike about Japanese web design – that, and Mixi).
The main story continues to be about corruption, bribery and deceit; albeit for a measely 20 mil. Turns out that the Nishimatsu Construction company created a series of dummy companies and put money into a consulting company that did nothing – basically a way to funnel money to the president. The latest development is that Japan is getting help from Thailand as it appears that there were bribes handed to highly placed city officials. (The bribes ranged from $800,000 to 2 million). I found an English story about it here.
The other stories are less salacious. Japan and Korea are having high level talks about the economy and North Korea, a politician is stepping down from his position in the Liberal Democrats, a father and son were shot (!!!), with the son being gravely injured, out in the boonies and a subsection on Sumo that is too irritating for me to read. Oh, and it appears that Hiroshima’s soccer team has finally won their first game, 3-2; a full 8 games into the season.
